The AMEC dinner at Harlan's in Hongkong, sponsored by Ninestars, was a great possibility to discuss and explain the NEWBASE products in detail ;-). The image shows a group of international workshop members intensivly discussing about the latest tools for media monitoring during the dinner. So often I get asked what we do during these conferences, here is finally the chance to prove that everybody is working hard, fully focussed and engaged. Not to mention that the rest of night was spent in some bars to continue the discussion, even the loud music and the drinks could not stop us from debating, summarizing and conclusing. The workshop then ended at about 4 am, which should allow some overtime payment.

Just returned from my business trip to India. The mission was to finetune an iSpider-installation that we had already prepared remotely last week. Back from Tanzania and why Print is not dead at all!

Spent a week in Tanzania in doing some last finetuning and training on a NEWBASE PressProduction installation that we had remotely prepared. Fantastic, highly motivated and skilled people over there. Looking forward to help to get this media monitoring business up to speed!

Found an interesting article (German: WAN-IFRA-Präsident..), interviewing WAN-IFRA-president Mathews saying that:

1. newspaper market will grow by yearly 1 percent

2. growth results from growing editions in emerging countries in Africa and Asia overcompensating the loss in USA

3. potential prosperity and bloom for newspapers in Arabic countries, since free media play an important role for any kind of democratic development

Having visited the 2011 AMEC conference only for the Gala Dinner and the Friday morning sessions, I did not feel entitled to draw any conclusions or add substantial feedback. I just enjoyed the Gala Dinner, meeting old friends, customers, competitors and meeting new friends, potential customers, and potential business partners. As far as it concerns me, everything has been perfectly organized by the AMEC team and their national partner Manchete.
But today I received a FeedBlitz from KDPaine's PR Measurement Blog: After the Barcelona Principle, The Lisbon Priorities?
To be honest: this FeedBlitz made me wonder if I live on the right planet.
Am I allowed to add a comment? Our company is mainly software development. Measurement and analysis only play a minor role, but in 2008 we got at least an AMEC Bronze Award "Best Use of Media Evaluation - Business to Consumer".
So here are my points:
Argueing against the AVE may make a lot of sense and may be very honorable, offering different services and solutions may be appreciated by the markets, but fighting against the AVE and pointing with the fingers is probably more ridiculous than helpful. Trying to "advocate an industry boycott of firms offering AVE" reminds me more of old fashioned communism and building walls than of free markets. Interpreted this way the Barcelona Principles will become Barcelona Peanuts. I am not a top measurement expert, I am just a software person and AMEC member, but am I "worse than an idiot", am I "an hypocrite", just because I feel that this kind of AVE-discussion is like cracking a nut with a sledgehammer? Is this really all, Lisbon was about?

Donald Duck and Dagobert Duck: Lessons in Media Monitoring

I came across a great Donald Duck story: In ehapa's Lustige Taschenbücher 170, page 221, Donald Duck and Dagobert Duck show us how media monitoring works: Dagobert reads the newspapers and marks potentially relevant articles, Donald then cuts the marked articles - low payment and poor working conditions such as rusty scissors included. The resulting article collection (=press review) is then carefully analyzed by Dagobert. No wonder that this sophisticated media monitoring process helps Dagobert to identify the possible location of a hidden treasure. You can be sure that Dagobert will draw a huge profit out of monitoring and evaluation and - same as it ever was - Donald will just stay Donald.....

Useful tools for monitoring networks: WatchDirectory

A German organization, using our NEWBASE PressClipping software, directed our attention towards a tool named WatchDirectory, which they use to monitor their network and react on events and changes in folders.

I installed it in our demo environment and it was easy to identify many jobs to hand over to watchDirectory:

- check directories for a special number of files, delete files if the number is reached

- automatically convert/compress files whenever they are found in a directory

- automatically ftp files when they are found in a directory

- automatically delete unnecessary tmp-files

- any so many more

One can use the many internal event handlers or just initiate batch-files to perform the tasks needed. The batch-environment is enhanced by many additional environment variables that relate to the file or folder that triggered the event, allowing to use them for flexible batch command creation.

Better support for our support team to support our customers even better

Every month worldwide millions of press, epaper and Internet clipping are produced, evaluated and distributed using NEWBASE software.

We do our best to deliver stable software and care about configurations that cover all challenges of complex monitoring processes. But we aren't magicians: our software runs inside other software and hardware environments and depends on many factors that we cannot foresee. So yes, problems may occur and we may run into unique situations where so far unidentified bugs show up.

Our support team has done a great job so far, but even great support teams also deserve support and here is the story:

Whenever you contact our support by phone or mail you will see the difference: first you will receive a mail informing you about a Ticket-ID, that will from now on accompany your case until it is solved.

The reason behind this: we have integrated a support management system (SMS) into our customer relation management system (CRM). This will keep everybody at NEWBASE updated about what is going on with our customers. Sales will always know which cases are open and which are closed and which status they have. Support team and development team can always get a fast overview about the status of any support case, even if they haven’t been involved so far.

Using this SMS-system is the logical way to anticipate the tremendous importance our software has won for so many monitoring services all over the world.

Internally we have setup a procedure that has to be followed for every support ticket to serve customers the best possible way:

After the initial contact, our support and development team will first evaluate whether the case is covered by the maintenance contract or not.

Cases covered by the maintenance contract:

All questions concerning problems with application programs or other instances of difficulty in connection with the processing performed by the software programs under contract will be taken over by our support team. The ticket will not be closed until a solution, a repair or an acceptable way-around was found and accepted. Keeping the workflow running and ensure a stable monitoring production is our support team’s main goal.

Cases not covered by the maintenance contract:

All questions concerning services made necessary by changed or new customer requirements that result in requests for a new functionality which cannot be configured or made available with the software “as is” or which requires additional programming or changes in the data structure, will be handed over to our sales team. The support ticket will be closed. Sales will contact the customer to find the best solution and procedure possible to improve the workflow and the productivity and send a quotation for development and implemention. Making continuous process improvement possible for our customers is our sales team’s main goal.

Back from my visit at MediaBanc in Kuala Lumpur, the largest media monitoring and media analysis provider in South East Asia, I still feel the taste and smell of the Malaysian street restaurants, where Alan Lim, CEO of MediaBanc, and his management team introduced me to the secrets of the South East Asian cuisine - just sensational.

But dining was not the core motivation of this trip: 3 intensive days of presentations and discussions with our customer MediaBanc gave me deep insight views of how they integrate our NEWBASE PressClipping into their unique MediaBanc Valuator approach, also sharing philosophy and vision with me. We identified several options to even better support MediaBanc's unique workflow with our software modules and also defined some new development approaches that might be of general interest for the community of media monitoring companies.

It was my first visit in Argentina and I really had a great time in Buenos Aires! Unfortunately the Internet connection to Kenya was so slow, that I had to abort the training. Our customer in Kenya asked me whether I could send him some explanations and brought up the idea to create videos.

Tips and Tricks: Block analysis

NEWBASE systems can automatically recognize many different block types. Recent tests showed us that sometimes less is more. Reducing the amount of supported block types may sometimes make the cutting process simpler. If you do not need the differentiation of text blocks, text rows and text columns, your workflow may be faster if you only use text column as classification of any kind of text areas.

Please take a look at the following example and verify whether changing the predefined block classification may make sense for you, check the possible consequences of changing the definitions of block classifications and learn how to change the system configuration to reduce the different block types.

New toolbar design, configurable toolbars

The design of the toolbars in the NEWBASE modules Capture, Cut&Paste, Enhanced Evaluation, Evaluation and PressReview has been redesigned to look fresher.
More important: Tools can now be activated and deactivated depending on the actions performed. Users will now only see those tools, they really need and work with.

New scissor: Cut articles "as image"

Cutting articles "as images" is a new method to cut articles without changing the layout and completely keeping the original design. Great for magazines with fancy layout. The trick is that the text blocks including their classifications are kept behind the image, so that the full text still reflects the reading direction of the text blocks and all article metadata can be identified. Articles that do not fit the article form, will be automatically scaled down. A threshold value may be defined up to which scaling down is accepted before forcing the cutter to switch to standard cutting (text blocks)

New tool: scalable form frame

The new form frame helps the cutter to see whether an article will fit the form before cutting the article. Changing the scaling factor will accordingly change the size of the form frame. Deciding the best way how to cut an article and select the right scale factor is now much easier.

Unicode

NEWBASE modules are now completely Unicode-enabled, allowing to handle articles with different character sets (Latin, Chinese, Kyrillic...) on the same workstation. All metadata can be stored in Unicode.

NEWBASE PressProduction can now offer different workflows in one installation allowing to setup the best performing workflow depending on the importance and relevance of the newspapers monitored.

a) EnhancedEvaluation
= readers evaluate relevant articles and cut the articles
